This develops the themes of reconciliation and understanding, through Lear and Gloucester, when the order is restored to them after realising their mistakes. This passage shows the themes particularly well, and inter-relates them to themselves and the play nicely. The passage brings Gloucester and King Lear together for the first time since Lear went mad and Gloucester was assaulted by Cornwall leaving his physically blind. This physical blindness symbolizes the metaphorical blindness that grips both himself, and Lear. They both have disloyal children and loyal children, and because of their blindness to the truth, they both banish the ones who love them most, and giving all to those who don't.

Gloucester, like Lear, has foolishly shown favor to one of his children over the other and he learns from his mistakes the hard way. The illegitimate and deceitful Edmond is in fact justly vanquished by his legitimate brother Edgar in Act 5, Scene 3. Edgar is responding to Edmond's betrayal of him, which was based in Edmond's jealousy of Edgar.

This is an instance of actual justice in the play. The end of the play shows, the, perhaps, truly cruel justice at the heart of this tragedy. Because of his foolishness at the start of the play, Lear dies heartbroken, having lost the only daughter who truly loved him. Is this true justice? It is payback, but it is certainly not merciful justice. He equally foolishly banishes his truthful daughter Cordelia and his close ally Kent.
